  Yesterday and Today

  How it started

In 1985, Father Anthony THAIPARAMBIL, started befriending the street children and as per the request of the children, answered one of the biggest needs of our time : the first shelter was created on the 8th of December. This humble shed turned out to be a home and all the requirements necessary in a home had to be seen to : food, clothing, medicines, schooling….and above all, love and concern had to be given. The children had to participate by their own efforts in all these steps.

  Today

• Ashalayam is presently managed by Father C. J. George as its Director since the 30th July 2008

• Ashalayam consist of 25 homes (5 being for girls) housing more than 700 children and 3 night shelters

  (1 being for girls)

• More than 5'000 children are taken care of in the streets and railway stations

• 3'000 children are reached out monthly through the Child Line (free and permanent telephone line operating

24 hours a day for children in distress) and are provided with counselling and repatriation facilities

• Every month an average of 25 children are placed back in their natural family and followed up

• More than 600 children are given literacy and life education. 350 of them attend official school in 22 public

  or private schools

• More than 50 child labourers are helped every month and are given long term education in different schools and

institutions through the Asha Shramik Project

• More than 600 children per month on average are provided with free medical check-up and with regular

assistance on nutrition and hygiene through the Mobile Health Clinic of Ashalayam

• Around 150 are under a professional training in the vocational training centre of Ashalayam as well as in

  outside centres

• Girls and boys who are vulnerable to trafficking and sexual exploitation are taken under the wings of

Ashalayam through the Sanjog (Linkage) Project

• 115 children receive computer education

• 90 are employed in different sectors

• 50 of them have purchased their plot of land, 32 have built their own houses and 38 have formed families

  of their own

• STAFF: 4 Salesians work in collaboration with 160 persons, all from various religions and horizons,

but committed to the vision of Don Bosco and cause of children in need

Future plans

Extending the work of Ashalayam to various towns and cities of West Bengal

• Initiating the process of final settlement of some of our children

• Individual or group Counselling and Special Therapeutic Program for the children on street and in all

  our homes

Centre for child alcoholics and addicts : the number of children affected by drugs or alcohol is increasing and   Ashalayam will create a centre to offer them professional help

Centre for HIV / AIDS : we plan to set a team to organize awareness programs and educate people on HIV /

AIDS. This will be done in collaboration with other NGO's already involved in this field

For handicapped children : we often meet handicapped children on the streets and their situation is worst

than the others are. It is difficult to find places for them in other organizations. A centre for those children could

  make our work more effective

For girls who require long term support : girls who are not able to stand on their own (semi-handicapped,

etc.) need a place to spend their life usefully. There is a proposal to set up a training cum-production centre

  for them

Centre / booth preferably at the station or bus stands : many children are coming to the streets every day.

As soon as they arrive, there are anti-socials waiting for them and no one knows what exactly my happen.

Therefore, more booths in certain key areas could help these children to get back to their parents or to one of

the existing homes before they remain into the streets

Street Club : organize a group of boys and staff to work on the street on a regular basis. The modality could

be to arrange for a vehicle and go around to different street corners to meet the children and spread the message

  of Ashalayam

Awareness programs in the rural areas : there are many cases of children running away from the rural areas.

It would be good to set up a team, which can create awareness regarding the dangers of the street life

Better linkage between other NGO's and Government Officials, which shall help in the final settlement of

  our children

• Planned strategies and policy level intervention culminating in a complete rehabilitation package for the

street children who come to us

Prisoner's children program : we project to develop an education and training program for children of

  prisoners who are in jail

Documentary film for awareness : we propose to make a documentary film on the various Curative

and Preventive activities being conducted by Ashalayam
